As you may already have heard the International Maritime Organisation has approved new regulations under the Safety of Life at Sea Convention ( Solas). Shippers will be required to provide to the master of the vessel or his representative the gross verified weight before loading cargo on board of the vessel. This will be in effective as from 1st of July 2016.
The shipper will be able to use two methods to obtain the verified weight:
Upon conclusion of packing and sealing a container the shipper may weigh or arrange weighing of the packed container .
The shipper ( or by arrangement of the shipper a 3rd party ) may weigh all cargo items and packages and securing material and add the tare mass of the container .
In both cases the weighing equipment must meet the accuracy standards of the country where the equipment is used. The declaration of the verified weight must be signed and dated by the shipper or by its duly authorized representative. In any case we will keep you updated on this subject in the next months to come .
